Margate

From Seaside Photoshoot to Unforgettable Journey: Unravelling the Magic of Margate

As lead destination researcher and photographer for Compendia, I often find myself visiting places with a specific aim. On this particular adventure, I was initially drawn to Margate for a photo shoot with Haeckels, an innovative skincare brand we'd recently welcomed to the Compendia global brand guide. Yet, Margate, with its eclectic charm, had other plans in store for us!

Upon arriving, we checked into Fort Road Hotel for what was meant to be a brief stay. As a seaside kid from Great Yarmouth, the symphony of seagulls, the laughter echoing from amusement arcades, and the stunning beachfront sunsets felt like a nostalgic embrace. I was immediately taken by Margate’s vibrancy, an energy that resonated with my own seaside upbringing.

As we delved deeper into the local independent scene, we discovered an array of exciting spots – vibrant cafes, lively bars, thought-provoking art galleries, and intoxicatingly rich culture. But it was the locals, with their welcoming warmth and humour, who truly won us over. As days turned into a week, their jestful remark, "Oh, you're still here then?" became a familiar chorus that embodied Margate's irresistible charm.

While seeking other accommodations, serendipity led me to Margate House, a new hotel preparing for its grand opening. My chat with Will, the owner, quickly evolved into a spontaneous gig as I found myself capturing the completed rooms for an upcoming magazine feature. In return, I had the honour of being their very first guest. Margate, it seemed, had a knack for putting you in the right place at the right time.

Our week-long stay culminated with an unplanned visit to Faith and Strangers where a fundraiser for "The Perfect Place to Grow," was in full swing. Camera in hand, I was swept up into the spontaneous role of event photographer. The evening brought together many of the remarkable people we'd met throughout our journey, including Robert Diament, director of Carl Freedman Gallery / Counter Editions and Talk Art Co-Host. Along with famed artist Tracey Emin, and a number of other influencers from Margate's creative and culinary scenes, all adding to the incredible tapestry of our Margate experience.

Following our trip, we are now in talks to create a physical guide book to Margate and The Isle of Thanet. Watch this space!
