Our leafy little city is fast becoming one of the vegan and vegetarian capitals of the UK, with new cafes and restaurants popping up year on year. If you’re looking for quality, quantity and absolute comfort, we recommend planning your next free weekend around one of these Sunday roasts!
The Black Horse, Earlham Road
You will find a fabulous meat-free option on the Black Horse menu any day of the week, but their roast dinners are particularly impressive. They are great value for money and guaranteed to leave vegetarians, vegans and gluten-free diners fully satisfied. You won’t be faced with any dry nut roasts or soggy veggies here, this pub has got it sussed. To top it all off, the surroundings are snug and the team are very friendly and welcoming, making it the perfect spot to enjoy a great meal, buy a few drinks and relax for the rest of your afternoon.
River Green Café, Trowse
Located about 25 minutes walk from the city centre in the tranquil village of Trowse, River Green Café is a fully vegan restaurant. Open Tuesday-Sunday serving lunch and dinner, River Green is famous for their signature Mushroom Wellington: mushroom, spinach, watercress and pine nut in a watercress sauce, served with seasonal vegetables and chips, wedges, boulanger or gratin potatoes – how’s that for choice?! Plus, there are vegetarian and ‘free from’ options too, with cheese and dairy available to keep the veggies happy. They also serve an ever-changing special Sunday roast menu, which is vegan and gluten free and comes with a choice of regular of vegan, gluten free Yorkshire puds!
The Temple Bar, Unthank Road
Located within the Golden Triangle, the roasts at The Temple Bar are certainly of a gold standard. They serve one of the most popular vegan roasts in Norwich, consisting of homemade nut roast, crispy roasties, a selection of veg such as carrots, broccoli, leeks and cabbage, vegan gravy and if you’re lucky, their signature cauliflower ‘cheese’ all for around £10. Be prepared for a bit of a wait, as they’re only a small team and get very busy, but we promise it will be worth it!
The Fat Cat & Canary, Thorpe Road
Known for its excellent beers, The Fat Cat & Canary also offer an awe-inspiring veggie roast. Available every Sunday 12 - 5 pm, you’ll even find avid meat-eaters opting for their vegetarian baked loaves, packed with veggies, nuts, pulses and finished off with homemade vegetable gravy, or their vegan option, a mouth-watering polenta, asparagus and vegetable bake. What’s better than a vegan roast I hear you say? A vegan roast with a side of vegan beer! Alongside their brilliant menu, you’ll also find a great range of unrefined beers that perfectly compliment your meal.
The River Kitchen @ Mr Postles Apothecary, Upper King St
We’re pretty grateful to Mr Postles cocktail bar for hosting this ‘pop-up’ by The River Kitchen, a cafe restaurant based in Wroxham. You will find them every Sunday serving traditional roast dinners alongside a pretty impressive vegan option. Serving 12 - 4 pm (or until they sell out), it’s best to make a reservation especially as they are getting ever more popular. The portion sizes are very generous and consist of vegan Yorkshire puddings (!!!), a nut roast, Marmite roast potatoes and a selection of roasted seasonal veg.
